Description
‘I Am Human’ is a portrait of the quiet resilience it takes to be yourself in a work that demands your silence. The figure stands cloaked in a rainbow-hued raincoat, hood lifted, face hidden – an invitation to see not ‘who’ they are, but ‘what’ they embody. A coat of many colours, a heart of many colours.
Behind them, a storm shifts from darkness into light, while colours from the coat splatter into the sky, hinting at the magic that can’t help but break through.
This piece honours anyone who has ever had to soften their voice, dimmed their brilliance, or reshaped themselves just to belong. It is a reminder that authenticity is not a risk, but a return – to the self we were always meant to be.
Inspired by the Carl Jung quote – ‘we can only find our light by making the darkness conscious’ – ‘I Am Human’ celebrates the moment we choose ourselves. The moment we step out of the shadows, refuse the labels and boxes, and recognise the quiet power we carry within.
Be the light among the shadows. You are HUMAN, you are WHOLE, and you were never meant to fit into a box, because real magic happens the moment you stop hiding and step into who you truly are.
A beacon for the different, the unheard, and the beautifully unique – ‘I Am Human’ invites you to turn your light back on, to stand as brightly as you are, and to remember what sets you apart is exactly what makes you extraordinary.
Artist Statement
‘I Am Human’ explores the relationship between inner truth and outer expression, and this piece is a deeply personal reflection of that journey. Born from the experiences of those who have felt unseen, unheard, excluded, or pressured to shrink themselves, it speaks to those who have had to dim their light to survive the world around them.
As an artist, I create work that honours the truth; it takes courage to be fully oneself. ‘I Am Human’ grew from a deep belief that authenticity is the birthplace of strength, connection, and transformation.
The painting reflects the journey many of us take – from dimming our brilliance to reclaiming it. The figure in the raincoat represents and symbolises the spectrum of identity and the vibrant inner world we often conceal. While the storm behind the figure shifts, illuminating the darkness, and echoing the process of making the unconvincing and unconscious conscious, as Carl Jung describes.
By keeping the face hidden the painting becomes universal, inviting viewers to see and find themselves within it. Healing doesn’t come by ignoring your past but by understanding it – and choosing to rise from it.
‘I Am Human’ is ultimately a statement of reclamation. A refusal to be boxed, labelled, or dimmed. It is an embrace of the beautifully different, an invitation to stand brightly in a world that once asked you to hide.
Through this work, I hope to remind others of their brilliance – the magic they carry, the colours they embody, the truth that being human – fully and unapologetically – is an act pure love of the self.
My intention is simple: to create art that reminds you that your truth is your power – and your authentic self is your great light.’ – Carly Wright
